Question: Is Downriver BJJ qualified to teach?

Answer:  Professor Brent Insco holds a black belt card issued by the International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) and received his third stripe on his black belt June 21, 2022.  Before his career change, Brent was an elementary school teacher and he now uses his prior teaching experience to design and develop a curriculum for his academy.

Question:  Who is the IBJJF?

Answer: The International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) hosts several of the biggest Brazilian (BJJ) tournaments in the world, including the World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, Nogi World Jiu-Jitsu Championship, Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championship and European Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship. The federation was created by Carlos Gracie, Jr., who is the head of one of the largest Brazilian jiu-jitsu associations, Gracie Barra in the world.  If you are anything in the world of Jiu Jitsu, you will be recognized by the IBJJF.

Question: Why learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?

Answer: Brazilian Jiu/Ju Jitsu has proven itself to be one of the most effective martial arts for self defense.  BJJ uses techniques that allow a smaller opponent to subdue a larger opponent.  It is perfect for self defense, women’s self defense, kids bully-proofing.  It is one of the only martial arts where “pulling punches” is not necessary.  The actual movement can be completed in it’s entirety allowing the student to know exactly what a finishing move “feels” like.

Question: Do I need to know anything before I start?

Answer: No, we have a motto “leave your ego at the door”.  Professor Brent has been teaching martial arts for most of his life.  He has designed a curriculum that will allow the most novice of newbies to feel comfortable while learning the foundation of BJJ. We offer classes that are tailored to each rank: white belts only, advanced beginner’s, advanced and all rank classes.

Question: How do I get ranked at DRBJJ?

Answer: We follow the IBJJF recommendations for minimum ages, minimum period, degree system.  Click on link to view recommendations https://ibjjf.com/graduation-system.  Professor Brent also has an attendance requirement.
